Freeform’s original scripted cancellation run continues with the departures of young adult thriller Cruel Summer, which aired for two seasons, and The Fosters spin-off Good Trouble, which will conclude after five seasons.
Good Trouble is currently on a mid-season break, so while a sixth season won’t see the light of day, fans still have the second instalment of season five to look forward to.
The show began with Mariana Adams Foster (Cierra Ramirez) and Callie Adams Foster (Maia Mitchell) at its heart — following the sisters as they arrive at their new home in downtown LA. The drama begins with Mariana renting them a shared ‘loft’ in a large communal living space — known as ‘The Coterie’ rather than a private space she had alluded to.
With the true definition of an ensemble cast, Good Trouble follows The Coterie’s inhabitants as they navigate life, love, lust, careers, and communal living at its most intimate. It explores important issues in-depth, giving storylines time to breathe without glossing over crucial nuances. Such topics include Trans rights, homelessness, America’s justice and prison systems, grief, eating disorders, and the broad scope of mental health.
The second half of season five should air on the 2nd of January in the US and, while it is unclear when it will be available to stream in the UK, the first half landed on Disney+ a few months after its US broadcast.
Assuming the show wouldn’t have known it was the end when season five wrapped, it will want to accept what Deadline has reported as an “opportunity to film some additional scenes for a supersized series finale episode to properly wrap up the series.”
The Hollywood Reporter claims sources say Freeform executives wanted to bring back Good Trouble but couldn’t justify the costs — particularly as Disney (which owns Freeform) looks to cut another $2 billion from costs. A widespread shift from cable to streaming has also featured heavily in the conversation.
Following the news of Good Trouble’s cancellation, Cierra Ramirez took to Instagram, posting a carousel of screenshotted notes thanking all those involved with The Fosters and Good Trouble over the years.
Opening the letter, she says: “So many emotions right now after hearing that our beloved show, Good Trouble, has come to an end. The greatest one of all, being gratitude.”
Maia Mitchell’s reply reads: “Sister, Forever”.
Both Good Trouble and The Fosters are available to stream on Disney+.
