Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies was originally conceived as a film which then extended to a mini series. Following critical success and five Primetime Emmy wins the show was renewed for a second season, adding Meryl Streep to an already star-studded cast. However, due to scheduling conflicts and the death of series director/editor Jean-Marc Vallée in 2022, a third season has so far seemed unlikely.
Last week, speaking at a Q&A event in Naples, star Nicole Kidman discussed her love for the show and addressed the possibility of further seasons.
During the Q&A, Kidman was asked for her favourite role to date and why. Kidman responded “I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children and I was thinking I was going to retire and then this situation came along where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show and create that show and then all of you watched it and made it a massive success.” She then went on to say, “We will be bringing you a third one, just FYI,” causing enthusiastic cheering from the crowd.
Season one starred Kidman and Witherspoon alongside Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley as the show’s leads; the Monterey Five. Taking place in Monterey, California, it followed the interwoven lives of the five women and their children, concluding with the murder of one’s husband.
The second season focused on the fallout from the murder and fleshed out some of the less explored characters from the first season in addition to focusing on a vicious custody battle between Kidman and Streep’s characters. Though originally unplanned, it served as an extended epilogue of sorts and left room for further development.
The series also boasted an impressive supporting cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Kathryn Newton, and Adam Scott. With such a large cast of busy actors it’s not surprising that scheduling conflicts have made the show so difficult to renew.
There has been no further confirmation on the show’s revival, but stay tuned for more updates.
