After more than a year’s wait and a fan campaign to secure the show’s renewal, the much-anticipated teaser trailer for Our Flag Means Death’s second season has been released.
Airing on HBO’s platform Max from 5 October, season two picks up where the first instalment left off – with feared captain Edward Teach (Taika Waititi) appearing to terrorise the seas following his heartbreak after a misunderstanding with gentleman pirate, Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). The teaser seems to open with Stede attempting to send Ed a message in a bottle, after having rescued his own crew from the island on which they were marooned in the season finale. Ed himself is still hurt and furious, but is certainly doing some pining of his own, even repainting a stolen pair of wedding cake toppers to look like himself and Stede.
The show’s first season was praised by fans for its broad range of queer representation onscreen, and this looks to be consistent as the show continues – the main question everyone seems to be asking is whether Ed and Stede will reunite and reconcile. But with the teaser also showing plenty of action (Ed’s crew raiding a wedding ship and Stede appearing to team up with Ed’s first mate Izzy Hands, among other things) who knows how long it might take them to get there?
The show’s principal cast and much of the supporting cast are returning for season two, as well as being joined by some new faces. Not pictured in the trailer, but showcased in Vanity Fair’s exclusive first look, are Minnie Driver as pirate Anne Bonny and Ruibo Qian as merchant Susan. Also speculated on is the fate of Lucius (Nathan Foad) who appears to have been drowned at the end of season one. So, will he make it back to shore, and will Ed and Stede manage to stay afloat? Looks like we’ll find out next month.
