Title: Jane Eyre

Author: Charlotte Brontë

What I Think So Far: Although my decision to read more classic literature for fun rather than education has taken a few years to actually become a thing in my life, I would say selecting Jane Eyre from the collection of classics I have acquired over the years was an excellent choice. Originally published as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography, I can’t help but feel as if I am reading an individual’s life story; the first person narrative, a unique element that I have not come across before within this genre, makes it easy to connect with an individual that, due to the time period, is facing many different obstacles and has completely different expectations from myself. In fact, the intense description and intelligent vocabulary that have often pushed me away from the good old classics is actually enjoyable, although. I’m not sure if it’s Brontë’s literary talent or a sign my literary skills have matured enough so that I don’t feel the time gap as much. Unfortunately, as I have watched the film, or at least multiple adaptations of the novel, I have removed the mystery and, if I’m honest, an element of enjoyment. Nevertheless, I still find myself loathing The Reeds and wanting Jane to be treated decently, perhaps even more than before.

Would I recommend? Absolutely. The first person narrative definitely makes this novel more accessible than some other classics I have read. Some may find the excessive description and detail a little tedious, but I will admit this element makes the English Literature student within me dance with glee and satisfies the History nerd that shines through every now and then.
