Magnum P.I. will end with season five, NBC confirmed on 23 June. The first ten episodes aired earlier this year and the final ten are currently slated for release during the 2024 midseason.

The reboot of the popular eighties show, which starred Tom Selleck, originally aired on CBS for four seasons before being cancelled last year. It was then swiftly picked up by NBC for its fifth, and now final, season.

In this reboot, Jay Hernandez stars as Thomas Magnum – a Navy SEAL turned private investigator in Hawaii. Other cast members include Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Amy Hill and Tim Kang. The show’s executive producers are Eric Guggenhiem, Justin Lin, John Davis and John Fox and it is a co-production by Universal TV and CBS studios.

The casts’ contracts with NBC expire on 30 June. This happens to be the same day that SAG-AFTRA’s (the actors union) contract with the AMPTP expires which could result in SAG members joining the WGA on strike. This meant that NBC either had to renew the casts members’ contracts, with no indication of when a sixth season could begin production, and keep the actors under contract for a further year, or release them.

Magnum P.I. cast and crew have reacted to the announcement. Perdita Weeks, who plays Juliet Higgins posted a photo on Instagram. The photo, which includes co-star Jay Hernandez, is captioned: “after one hell of an encore it’s time for us at Magnum PI to ride off into the sunset. Thank you so much for all the support and huge thanks to the whole cast and crew for half a decade of fun. Mahalo nui loa.”

The writing team’s Twitter account also tweeted a statement thanking fans, “thank you to the fans for all the support you’ve given our show over the past five years. Thanks also to NBC, UTV, CBS-TV and of course the great state of Hawaii.”

The first three seasons of Magnum P.I. are available to stream on NowTV with a subscription. All four seasons are available for purchase on Apple TV+, Amazon, and more.
