And just like that… Everyone’s favourite New York women are back, this time in the form of a short yet noticeably sweet trailer released this past Wednesday.
Gone are the sombre tones of Carrie’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) mourning and Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) collapse, and questionably swift exit, from alcoholism. Instead, we find our leads exploring the new season with a refreshing spring in their step. Such tonal shift, as quickly picked up on from fans across the internet, brings the series’ energy back towards that of its predecessor Sex And The City (1998-2004), potentially amending a complaint fans had after the first series of the reboot premiered back in December 2021.
“If you’re lucky, no matter what life hands you, you can always rely on your closest friends to be there,” recites Carrie Bradshaw via voiceover as we see a swift montage of various characters perusing the city and enjoying each other’s company. Immediately we are reminded of the sentiment that kept fans coming back for more over the original series and subsequent films; the love and support of friends remain omnipresent regardless of the lovers that come and go. Such a sentiment may remain difficult for certain fans to swallow given that it was last thrown out by Samantha, previously portrayed by Kim Cattrall, in the second film released in 2010.
“Men, babies – doesn’t matter. We’re soulmates,” announced Samantha after a session of karaoke on their questionable excursion to the middle east in Sex And The City 2. As has become pop culture lore now, Kim Cattrall’s ‘feud’ with SJP and her subsequent exclusion from the spin off continues to be spoken of, however this time around, at least from the teased minute and a half, her absence feels much less jarring.
From Charlotte (Kristen Davis) discussing supposed ‘MILF Lists’ at her child’s school and a noticeably significant increase in the sexual antics and intimacy that put the original series on the map, a breezy soundtrack carries us through the teasing of where we can find our protagonists next. Halloween parties, luncheons, charity benefits, and various classic ‘skip & walks’ from Carrie litter the screen, ending on the most noteworthy aspect of the second series: the return of Aiden (John Corbett) as Carrie’s love interest from the original series. Aiden’s return is already proving to be divisive amongst fans after the death of Carrie’s husband Mr Big in the first series. With Carrie having scattered her husband’s ashes in Paris in the series one finale, it’s clear that she finds herself open to exploring new, or seemingly old, loves.
With the trailer being so short we are bound to see more advertising from the show prior to its season premiere in June on Sky Atlantic (NOW TV here in the UK). In the meantime, you can catch re-watching every old episode, and wait eagerly for the return of And Just Like That…
