The first season of Shadow and Bone hit Netflix in April 2021 to applause from fans of the book series, written by Leigh Bardugo. Critics also spoke highly of the series, so its renewal came as no surprise. Now, a date is finally here for season two — expect more of the Grishaverse on March 16th.
With a whole new array of characters to join the ensemble cast, there’s a lot to look forward to and, adding a teaser trailer dropped on the 24th of September, fans now have some official stills to keep them satiated before March.
The first season follows two groups: The Crows from the Six of Crows books and the group from the Shadow and Bone book series. They’re on separate sides of the world, slowly coming closer together — Ketterdam (based on 16th-17th century Amsterdam) and Ravka (based on 19th century Russia) are their central locations. However, the journey of Alina Starkov (breakout star Jessie Mei Li) and her discovery of being a sun summoner is the central plot of season one. This tore her apart from childhood friend Mal (Archie Reneaux) and set her in the sights of General Kirigan (played by Ben Barnes, also known for other book adaptations like The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian). The last episode saw the General looking worse for wear, so the stills secure his reappearance in a similar state, and ensure more of Alina learning the realms of her power.
Glimpses of the new characters are also captured: Nikolai Lanstov (played by Patrick Gibson), Toyla and Tamar (the brother and sister duo played by Lewis Tan and Anna Leong Brophy), and Wylan (played by Jack Wolfe). Along with the newcomers, the returning cast appear to be in the action. Matthias (Calahan Skogman) is shown captured in Hellgate Prison, promising more Six of Crows book content. After all, Six of Crows is set two years post-Shadow and Bone in the Grishaverse timeline, so their narrative is only just beginning as we delve into Shadow and Bone.
There’s likely to be just as much adventure, tension, romance as there was in season one and, with a glimpse of fan-favourite Nikolai in his glamorous, pirate-esque glory, season two showcases the fantastical nature of the Grishaverse and the beloved characters to go with it.
Season one of Shadow and Bone is currently streaming on Netflix.
