Set in New York City, 1899, this true story follows a band of newspaper sellers chasing a better life for themselves. Incendiary leader Jack Kelly (Michael Ahomka-Lindsay) takes charge, stirring up his fellow newsies to protest Joseph Pulitzer’s (Cameron Blakely) hike in newspaper prices and fight for justice, showing solidarity through strikes.
Given the UK’s current political climate, many reviews observe how timely Newsies’ arrival in London truly is: “It’s a story that feels massively relevant at a time when half the UK’s either on strike or wishing it was”. This perhaps goes some way towards explaining the huge popularity it is garnering in reviews and across social media. One Twitter user neatly sums up the sentiments of many audience members:
Broadway’s 2012 production of Newsies was originally due to play only 100 performances, but went on to play over 1,000 following multiple extensions. It also won two Tony Awards, including one for Best Original Score.
Newsies is running until 16 April 2023 at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre. UK theatregoers should take heed: ‘Seize the Day’ and enjoy the thrill of one of Broadway’s biggest hits right on your doorstep while you can!
