Fans of the American teen sitcom That ’70s Show were delighted at the release of the teaser trailer for the cult classic’s upcoming spin-off series. The highly anticipated spin-off stars 15-year-old Callie Haverda as Leia in her first leading role. It has also been confirmed that original cast members, including Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, will reunite as special guests.
Netflix’s preview of the rebooted series, set to air on the streaming platform early next year, garnered praise as fan favourites Kitty and Red (Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith) returned to appear in the Forman’s infamous basement. Supercharged with ’90s nostalgia, the series follows Leia Forman, daughter of high school sweethearts Eric and Donna. It’s the summer of 1995, and we’re introduced to a new generation of Point Place alumni.
The trailer opens with Eric’s iconic Vista Cruiser, complete with the very same license plate as the original series. From the outset, That ’90s Show seems to channel the same nostalgic warmth as its predecessor, which premiered in 1998. Also making a notable reappearance, it seems, is a good friend of the gang—of the herbal persuasion.
Missing from the line-up is Hyde, portrayed by Danny Masterson who is currently facing three charges of sexual assault. Wilmer Valderrama, however, is set to reprise his role as foreign exchange student Fez. This is despite recent controversy regarding his previous relationship with Disney star Demi Lovato who was 12 years his junior.
The enthusiastic reception to the release of the trailer suggests it will be a success greater than FOX’s attempt at a loosely based 2002 spin-off series named That ’80s Show. The series starred Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and was cancelled after only 13 episodes. Thus far, fans have praised the upcoming series for its inclusion of original cast members, as well as the recent casting. Many fans on social media have also claimed that Leia bears resemblance to her on-screen father, Topher Grace.
That ’90s Show will premiere on Netflix, 19 January 2023.
