The hacker who claimed responsibility for the leak of Grand Theft Auto 6 material is being investigated in the United States by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Included in this leak was several minutes of Grand Theft Auto 6 early game footage which was uploaded on YouTube and other social media platforms, but has since been taken down after action by Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive.

GTA developer Rockstar Games released a statement on its social media accounts regarding the hacking, “We Recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage of the next Grand Theft Auto.”

“We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned.”

Reaction on social media to the leak of material has been mixed. Many fans have shared their sympathies for the developers whose incomplete work was unauthorizedly exposed, whilst others have, despite it being far from finished criticized the gameplay footage and the game’s development for taking so long.

The same attacker has also said they were behind a series of hackings targeted at transportation service provider Uber.

In a recent , Uber commented on the attacks, “We believe that this attacker (or attackers) are affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus$ … This group typically uses similar techniques to target technology companies, and in 2022 alone has breached Microsoft, Cisco, Samsung, Nvidia and Okta, among others.”

“There are also reports over the weekend that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar Games. We are in close coordination with the FBI and US Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”
