FX announces ‘Welcome to Wrexham,’ a show bound to be an interesting watch due to Reynold’s and Mcelhenney’s infectious charisma.

You may have spotted a rather interesting story in the news over the last year: two of Hollywood’s most beloved actors decided to buy a small non-league football team together. Ryan Reynolds, best known for his work in Deadpool and Free Guy, and Rob McElhenney, one of the brains behind Fx’s comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, decided to buy Welsh club Wrexham AFC.

This interesting development has received its own TV show in FX’s Welcome to Wrexham, which will also be available on Disney Plus. It will be available in the UK on Disney Plus from August 25th.

Ever since the show was announced I was excited. I remember watching the first season of Class of ’92: Out of Their League, which followed the Class of 92’s takeover of Salford City FC and really enjoying it. Welcome to Wrexham seems similar but instead of Gary Neville and Phil Scholes, it is being fronted by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, two of our generation’s greatest entertainers.

To further build the excitement, the show has received rave reviews prior to its much-anticipated premiere. NME’s Sam Moore cited how the poignant post-Covid return of fans to games adds emotion to the show, as well as the fact that the fans are given a voice, so it isn’t all about Reynolds and McElhenney.

National World’s Jason Jones also writes how “it’s clear that for all of their fame and incalculable wealth, McElhenney and Reynolds never want to eclipse Wrexham – as a team, or as a town.” This demonstrates Reynolds and McElhenney’s humbleness in that they want to provide a platform for Wrexham, as opposed to using the club to promote themselves.

Anything that features both Reynolds and McElhenney is bound to be a great watch due to the pair’s infectious charisma and likeability. Throw in an interesting football takeover story and Welcome to Wrexham has all the ingredients of a fascinating watch.
