A Game of Thrones sequel about one of the show’s most recognisable characters, Jon Snow, is reportedly in the works.
While the project is still in early development stages, Kit Harington is already on board to reprise his iconic role should the HBO network decide to progress with the series.
Game of Thrones fans will get to see the continuation of Jon Snow’s story following the events of the eighth season’s finale. The character was initially introduced as the illegitimate son of the Stark family who served on the Night’s Watch at The Wall in the North of Westeros. From battling with wildlings and the undead, to fighting against his own inner demons, viewers gravitated towards his journey of self-discovery. Over the course of the series, he eventually transformed into a heroic figure – commanding and self-assured in spite of his burdensome status as a bastard.
The final season saw Jon Snow discover his true heritage, learning that he was actually the son of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, making him a potential heir to the Iron Throne. Following this shocking revelation, conflict arose between his lover Daenerys Targaryen, reaching a tragic climax where he was forced to kill Daenerys as a means of protecting Westeros from her ruthless violence. As punishment for his crime, he was forced to return to the Night’s Watch, where we see him ride off beyond the now-destroyed Wall with the Wildlings.
Many fans were left disappointed with this conclusion to Jon Snow’s character, undermining his well-earned reputation as a powerful leader, and undoing seasons’ worth of personal growth.
Although we know nothing concerning plot details for the upcoming spin-off series, the character’s story arc could be redeemed according to an article by The Hollywood Reporter.
Fans have taken to social media to share their optimism for the series: “This could be a chance to right some of the wrongs in those last two season and especially the raw deal the character Jon Snow got for essentially saving the world”.
There is also potential for other characters, who have survived the Game of Thrones, to make an appearance like Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie).
This series marks the seventh Game of Thrones project in the works, with the upcoming House of the Dragon prequel series making its debut on August 21 2022.
