The National Theatre of Scotland’s Exodus, a satirical play that ridicules power systems, will tour Scotland later this year.
The play explores systematic deception and indifference to human suffering and follows Home Secretary Asiya Rao, who is trying to become the country’s leader. While on a publicity stunt with her advisor at the white cliffs of Dover, something unexpected washes up.
Aryana Ramkhalawon will play Asiya Rao and Sophie Steer will play Phoebe Bernays, the home secretary’s advisor. Anna Russell-Martin will play journalist Tobi Tucker and Habiba Saleh will play performer Haben Halie.
The play is written by Uma Nada-Rajah, who was the Starter Female Political Comedy Writer in Residence with the National Theatre of Scotland in 2020, and directed by Debbie Hannan, associate director for the National Theatre of Scotland. Alisa Kalyanova is set and costume designer, Laura Howard is lighting designer, Mark Melville is composer/sound designer and Rob Willoughby is video designer.
Following a performance at Stirling’s Macrobert Arts Centre on 28 July, the play will be shown at Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh as part of the Traverse Festival from 7-28 August excluding Mondays. BSL interpreted, audio described, captioned and relaxed performances will be included in the run.
It will then tour to Eastgate Theatre in Peebles, An Lanntair in Stornoway, CentreStage in Kilmarnock, Lemon Tree in Aberdeen and Tron Theatre in Glasgow, before closing at Mull Theatre on 21 September.
Tickets for Exodus can be purchased on the National Theatre of Scotland’s website.
