Co-creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have recently announced that Season 3 of Disney+’s The Mandalorian will debut in February 2023, during a panel at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim.
The critically acclaimed series is set five years after 1983’s Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and follows the adventures of Din Djarin, a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter in the outer reaches of a galaxy far, far away. Alongside his perilous missions he must also protect his young Force-sensitive companion Grogu. The series, starring Pedro Pascal as the titular role, has won over the hearts of critics and Star Wars fans alike, accumulating 39 Emmy nominations including Best Drama Series and 14 wins since premiering on Disney+ in 2020.
Katee Sackhoff also made an appearance at the convention, announcing that she will also be resuming her role as Bo-Katan Kryze, who made her debut during season 2. The audience at the panel also got to see a teaser for the upcoming series which, according to Variety, features Mando having to face the consequences of removing his sacred Mandalorian helmet.
Following on from where season 2 left off, which saw Grogu and Mando finally part ways as Luke Skywalker (played by a digitally de-aged Mark Hamill) took Grogu under his wing to train him in the ways of the Force. Yet, those who have watched The Book of Boba Fett will know that this emotional farewell may be short-lived as Grogu chooses to abandon his Jedi training to reunite with Mando.
However, our eponymous hero faces problems of his own as removing the helmet is like a committing cardinal sin within Mandalorian culture. Thus, in order to restore his honour, he learns that he must visit “the living waters” beneath the mines on the planet Mandalore. This proves to be more complicated in light of the fact that the Empire had destroyed the entire planet in their great purge of Mandalorians from the galaxy.
Further details about the third season are kept under wraps, however Pedro Pascal promises audiences that they will not be disappointed. During the second day of the Star Wars Celebration event held at the Anaheim Convention Centre, he claimed the upcoming third season would be full of “action,” “spectacle,” and surprises.”
Favreau and Filoni also announced the Ahsoka spinoff, starring Rosario Dawson as Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan, which is set to debut sometime in 2023.
