An untitled documentary about Grammy Award-winning artist Lizzo will premiere on HBO Max this autumn. While attending the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront event in New York, the “Good As Hell” artist unveiled a teaser trailer for the documentary after making the announcement.

From her humble beginnings to her skyrocketing international success, the documentary will give beloved fans an insight into the highs and lows of her journey to fame.

In a statement to Variety, Lizzo expresses her excitement for the upcoming film: “Growing up I never dreamed I’d get to experience all of the things I’ve accomplished in my life, and I’m just getting started.”

“From ‘Cuz I Love You’ to my dramatic world tour, losing and gaining love, and creating my new album ‘Special,’ y’all get to see the amount of time, patience, blood, sweat and tears that went into this process,” she continued. “It takes ten years to become an ‘overnight success,’ and hopefully I can inspire other young creatives to keep going.”

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, also showed her enthusiasm for the project: “To get the chance to work with someone we have admired and adored for so long is a dream come true. Lizzo’s formidable talent has entertained and inspired millions, and we are ecstatic to help share her incredible journey.”

It is likely this documentary will also show a more personal side of the artist, following a similar authentic style to her reality competition series Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, which premiered on 25 March via Prime Video. This series brought the topic of body positivity to the forefront, with Lizzo talking openly about her struggles with confidence on social media. In a recent interview with Today, Lizzo explains how her music has given her a platform to practise self-love: “I think I just kind of started to tear those insecurities down and reclaim the confidence I was born with, my God-given confidence that we all have.”

The documentary will be directed by Doug Pray and produced by Kevin Beisler, Kevin Weaver, Ryan Kroft and Nicole Rocklin. As well as being the focal point of the documentary, Lizzo will also assume the role of an executive producer, through her production company Lizzobangers.

Although a specific release date is yet to be confirmed, it will likely arrive soon after Lizzo’s upcoming studio album Special, due to be released 15 July.
