Track Review: Amazing // Rex Orange County

This Valentine’s day felt sweeter after the release of Rex Orange County’s brand new track ‘Amazing’. Alexander James O’Connor is only 24 years old, yet he has already gone viral and hit the Top Ten Billboard Independent Albums chart with his second LP, Apricot Princess, in 2017. That’s probably because Rex’s lyrics have the ability to lighten complex themes and emotions with charming simplicity. The sugary ballad ‘Amazing,’ taken from his upcoming fourth album Who Cares?, is a fit example. Who Cares? is due for release March 11 and its cover will star a bunch of Dalmatians surrounding Rex, making him the new Roger Radcliffe.

‘Amazing’ utters the beauty behind the unpredictability of love. Rex’s mellow vocals match the laid-back guitar riffs of the track. Plus, it transmits the happiness of finding someone who accepts and even loves your imperfections no matter what. This is echoed in the Official Video of ‘Amazing,’ which tells the story of a shy guy trying to let out his feelings to his crush. The video is set in what appears to be a parallel world in pure Wes Anderson style – here hands have feet, eyes, and even a job. Its colours and shapes fit perfectly with the elegant, jazzy, almost magical atmosphere of the track, which is built from the start by a delicate intro assembled through tuneful violins.
