Known for soft, laid-back, bedroom-pop beats and delicate introspections into interpersonal relationships, Peach Pit have been making waves in the indie scene ever since their debut album, Being So Normal, hit the airwaves in 2017. Introduced by the lead single ‘Alrighty Aphoridite’, their first record quickly became an indie staple and thrust the band into the limelight.
Talking on the release, frontman Neil Smith stated: “From 2 to 3 is a collection of songs that were written late at night, alone in a small apartment with a hushed voice so as not to wake anyone. We’re excited to be releasing one of our favorites from the record called ‘Look Out!’; it’s a nod to the apartments and neighborhoods where we wrote these songs, and to the corner store attendants that sold us junk on those late nights. The guys and I and our long-time collaborator Lester also went on a road trip this summer and filmed some videos that we really feel capture the spirit of the music perfectly.”
Returning in 2022 with their third LP From 2 To 3, fans had high expectations — and the Vancouver quartet more than lived up to their spot on the pedestal.
Peach Pit are: Neil Smith (vocals, guitar), Chris Vanderkooy (guitar), Peter Wilton (bass), and Mikey Pascuzzi (drums).
Opening up with the lead single ‘Up Granville’, we are immediately plunged back into the rose-tinted, bubbly world of Peach Pit. Doting a picturesque narrative of love and loss, the band utilise colour-infused imagery to incite reminiscence of summer days: “Of blood red // Even at the golden light of morning”. Being thrust directly into the pits of introspection on only the first track comes as a welcome reminder of the poetic and emotive power of Peach Pit’s lyricism.
Rife with soothing and assertive guitar strums, ‘Up Granville’ is succeeded by ‘Vickie’ — a soft cut diving into nostalgia with folk assertions — lead-singer Smith dotes on his relationship with the main protagonist. See-sawing on their companionship by swinging between love and hate before lending the final declaration, “I thank god you don’t live nеxt door to me”.
Sliding through the bouncy melodies of ‘Lips Like Yours’ and the crashing percussion and soaring vocals of statement piece ‘Pepsi On The House’, we reach ‘Look Out!’. Acting as the second single to be plucked from the record, ‘Look Out!’ is a contemporary cut veined with melancholy set to prompt nostalgia in a nod to their neighborhood town and the streets from which the album was penned. Reflecting on the journey they’ve travelled as a band, the band uses wistful instrumentation as they “(Wade) my way through this neighborhood”, as they skirt through breezy vocalisations and jilty percussions, complemented by Wilton wielding a harmonica.
On ‘Everything About You’ Smith pens an ode to a lover, lamenting “Something’s about you // Something’s different that I like”, as he celebrates individuality and embracing our uniqueness. Paired with insistent percussive beats and humble plucks, the cut offers a delicate turn to the album, leaning away from the folk aspects and delving more into the dream-pop genre.
Transitioning into the country-esque beats of ‘Give Up Baby Go’, Peach Pit pay homage to folk tracks before deep diving into wistful lyricism present in ‘Last Days Of Lonesome’.
Bidding farewell to this chapter of their career with the titular track, guitars are softly strummed before melodic vocals are introduced atop, in a final bid of melancholia-infused introspections.
With From 2 To 3 Peach Pit have firmly proved their ability to continuously produce genuinely infectious indie-rock tunes. 2022 is set to be an exciting year for the Canadian quartet.
