Listening to ‘I Don’t Know Why’, the latest single from Leeds-based duo Sunflower Thieves, feels like it has been perfectly timed to capture our collective mood. The new release follows ‘Sirens’ as the second song from their forthcoming 2022 EP.

As the days start to lengthen and we emerge from another period of pandemic induced introspection, it feels like there is something to look forward to. ‘I Don’t Know Why’, whilst feeling introspective itself, offers a dreamy vision of warm lazy days to come. The vocals hint at the summery folk tones of The Mamas & the Papas, while the overall simple soundscape brings some of the earthiness of First Aid Kit. While the repeating chorus line of “I don’t know why” feels calming, this is not a dream-folk track to sit in the background. The verses are sharply observed prose that draws the listener in.

Sunflower Thieves explain the track is “about how complicated close relationships can be. How the differences in the way we live our lives and follow what we think can affect our understanding of each other, and equally of ourselves.”

‘I Don’t Know’ may be coloured with tinges of melancholy, as it explores the lack of connection in a loving relationship, but the melody and harmonies add a peaceful and uplifting hue.

Soft dreamy layered vocals define the texture as the gentle strums of an acoustic guitar add brush strokes. The hauntingly beautiful interlude of brass instrumentation brings warm tones and interest.

In the closing verses, the duo sing “sat inside and listened to the top songs you must hear before you die.” This may not be a lifetime defining track, but a few weeks into 2022, Sunflower Thieves have already shown they are one to watch this year.

If you are not sitting and listening to this track, I don’t know why.
