How I Met Your Father

Hulu has released the first trailer for their upcoming sitcom How I Met Your Father

A standalone sequel to How I Met Your Mother, which concluded in 2014 after nine seasons, the new show stars Hilary Duff, Chris Lowell, and Francia Raisa. Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, and Suraj Sharma complete the main cast.

How I Met Your Father follows a similar premise to its predecessor, which won ten Emmy awards out of thirty nominations. In the future, Sophie (Duff, but played in the future by Kim Cattrall) is telling her children the story about how she met their father. The story starts in the year 2021 and focuses on a group of closely-knit friends living in New York City.

The new show has been given a decidedly modern twist, with online dating set to feature in a major way. More broadly, the show focuses on the difficulties of establishing a genuine connection with another person and trying to figure out what to do with their lives. This central focus not only gives it a shared thematic DNA with How I Met Your Mother, but also addresses widespread feelings of insecurity and loneliness brought about by COVID-19. The series was filmed in its entirety during the coronavirus pandemic. It is currently unclear how, if at all, the new show will be linked to the events or characters of How I Met Your Mother.

How I Met Your Father is not the first attempt at a new series. In 2014, the pilot episode of How I Met Your Dad was expected to make its debut, but the project never reached completion. The new show is based on a rewritten version of the original script for this failed entry. In 2017, it was announced that Alison Bennett was writing a new spin-off series, but this project also never reached completion.

How I Met Your Father’s debut season consists of ten episodes and will be released on 18 January 2022.
