Six years after he initially took up the horns in Netflix’s Daredevil, Charlie Cox has been confirmed as playing the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President, said to CinemaBlend, “If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil. Where we see that, how we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen.” While it doesn’t provide much information on when to expect Cox back on our screens, it offers reassurance that he won’t be recast if Daredevil finds his way into the movies.

Cox himself has been more guarded when asked about his involvement in the MCU. Prior to Feige’s comment, he said, “If there was an opportunity for me to come back as Daredevil, whatever that would look like, I imagine it would be a reimagining of the character and the show. If they choose me to do it, there are going to be some elements that are of course the same. Or they might choose someone else and reboot it all over again.”

This announcement comes at a time where speculation about the character’s involvement is rife. Many fans have theorised whether the vigilante could be appearing in the upcoming Spiderman: No Way Home, even going as far as to claim to have seen his arm in the initial teaser trailer. The theories have emerged due to Daredevil’s role in the Spiderman comics, in which he serves as Peter Parker’s lawyer after the latter’s identity was publicly revealed: an event we have just seen occur in the MCU.

It also coincides with the Disney+ Hawkeye series, which contains heavy implications of the involvement of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. Fisk, as played by Vincent D’Onofrio, was the primary antagonist of Daredevil, starring opposite Cox. He tweeted in support of Feige’s announcement.

Daredevil ran for three seasons as part of a series of shows made in partnership between Netflix and Marvel. While the shows all made references to the MCU, the favour was not returned in the films, leading many to question whether the Netflix series was regarded as canon. Daredevil was received well by both fans and critics alike, sitting at 92% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

While we cannot know the details of Daredevil’s introduction to the MCU, Cox’s return to the red suit has been positively received by fans.
