The Emmys 2021 nominations have been revealed, with The Crown and The Mandalorian tying for lead nominations. The Netflix drama and Disney+ sci-fi adventure both received 24 nods including best drama series. Other nominees include Amazon’s The Boys and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
Additionally, Marvel’s WandaVision saw 23 nominations, with Elizabeth Olsen receiving her first nomination for best lead actress. She will be up against The Queen’s Gambit‘s Anya Taylor-Joy and I May Destroy You‘s Michela Coel. I May Destroy You is also up for best competitive limited series. The BBC/HBO series saw wide critical acclaim, gaining a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.1/10 on IMDB.
The Crown is dominating the Emmy’s casting awards. The lead drama actress category features both Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin, whilst Josh O’Connor is up for lead actor. Meanwhile, the nominations going to Disney’s The Mandalorian are primarily technical groups. The sci-fi drama saw nods in the production design, cinematogrophy, and many other categories.
Comedy categories are also brimming with talent. Ted Lasso, Emily in Paris, and The Komsinky Method are among those nominated for outstanding comedy series. Lead acting roles in a comedy series also features Kaley Cuoco, Aidy Bryant, Michael Douglas, and many more.
The Emmys are also making history this year, with transgender actress MJ Rodriguez in the run for leading actress in a drama series. This is the first nomination of a transgender performer for a major acting category. Likewise, fellow Pose actor Billy Porter is up for lead actor in a drama series.
How did the stars respond?
Many stars expressed their gratitude for the nominations, such as Ted Lasso’s Nick Mohammed, who is up for supporting comedy actor. The comedian tweeted after the Emmys revealed the nominations, saying “I mean… WHAT!?”
Conversely, Don Cheadle’s nomination for best guest actor in Marvel’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier confused the actor. The star tweeted “Thanks, well-wishers. Sorry, haters. I don’t really get it either, buuuuuuuuuut here we go.”
More than 25,000 members of the USA’s Television Academy vote for the categories in the awards ceremony, which will take place on 19 September.
