Nintendo has finally revealed its upgraded Switch model, which is due to launch on 8 October alongside Metroid Dread. It has a 7-inch OLED screen, 64GB of internal storage, a wide adjustable stand as well as improved speakers.
The new console also comes with a new dock with wired LAN port. It will be available in two colour variations, white and neon red/blue. Officially, it’s called the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) console.
The screen resolution remains the same as base model at 1280x720p. The screen size, however, is up to 7 inches compared to the previous model’s- 6.2 inch display. Battery life is still listed as “4.5-9 hours”, depending on usage, which is the same as the regular Switch.
In terms of size, the OLED model is slightly longer than the base model due to the increased screen size, measuring 102mm x 242mm x 13.9mm with Joy-Cons attached. It also weighs slightly more- 420g with the Joy-Cons attached, compared to the classic Switch which weights only 398g with Joy-Cons.
Rumours about Nintendo releasing an upgraded Switch model were circulating for quite some time. In March last year, Bloomberg reported on Nintendo’s plans to unveil a new console set to feature a seven-inch 720p OLED screen and output at up to 4K when connected to a TV. Clearly, the 4K resolution has been scrapped from the final product. A Nintendo spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that the new OLED model “does not have a new CPU or more RAM”.
The new console retails for £309.99 in the UK. That’s £30 more expensive than the base Switch model, which usually retails for £279.99, and more than £100 more expensive than the Switch Lite, which costs £199.99. The Nintendo Switch OLED model is available for pre-order from GAME and Smyth’s Toys.
