Netflix have released the first official trailer for Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, a feature-length film based on Guillermo del Toro’s animated Tales of Arcadia franchise.
Del Toro will be serving as an executive producer and writer on the new picture, which will be directed by Johane Matte, Francisco Ruiz-Velasco, and Andrew L. Schmidt.
Rise of the Titans will bring to a close the trilogy of fantasy TV shows that started airing on Netflix back in 2016, with Trollhunter, 3Below, and Wizards all coming under the umbrella Tales of Arcadia. The series follows events in the fictional town of Arcadia, a place inhabited by magic, supernatural creatures, trolls and titans (who would’ve thought?).
Tantalisingly for fans, the new film will bring the ArcadiaVerse’s unwieldly ensemble of cast members together for the first time. Included among the many names returning for one last fantasy adventure are Emile Hirsch, Lexi Medrano, and Charlie Saxton. They will be joined by Kelsey Grammer, Nick Frost, and Diego Luna, among others.
Tatiana Maslany, James Hong, and Brian Blessed will also lend their voices to the new movie. Every single actor on the cast list with the exception of Hong has previously starred in one of the three Arcadia shows, which is striking. It may not have the most name-recognition, but this is certainly the most expansive crossover of the summer.
Executive producer del Toro recently appeared on a panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where he described Arcadia’s concept as “three series that you can put together like a diorama and then you see how on an early episode of Trollhunters you’re going to see the characters of Wizards and 3Below interacting, and then go back on a Möbius strip and see other episodes from the others’ point of view. Then finish with a movie.
“It sounded really crazy, but we were very careful in how we developed the assets, but also in the storytelling.”
If this trailer has whetted your appetite, thankfully you won’t have to wait long to see the rest. Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans is set to premiere on Netflix on 21 July.
