Devolver Digital honoured its long-standing tradition of having its own showcase during the week of E3 with another stream filled with games, chilli dogs, and strange humour.
This year’s showcases, titled MaxPass+, continued the narrative of Nina Struthers, a character developed by the company to handle press events. Struthers has hosted several showcases, each one wildly different in tone, with the core purpose of poking fun at the corporate nature of the press event. Here’s all the major highlights of Devolver Digital’s zany press conference.
Shadow Warrior 3
Devolver kicked off their announcements with a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming first-person shooter game Shadow Warrior 3. The short clip highlights the game’s frantic gunplay razor-sharp melee combat, and a spectacular free-running movement system.
Shadow Warrior 3 is set to be released later this year for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Trek to Yomi
Trek to Yomi is a 2D action game set in feudal Japan. Players will follow the story of Hiroki, a young swordsman who made a vow to his dying Master to protect his town and the people he loves against all threats. Faced with tragedy and bound to duty, the lone samurai must voyage beyond life and death to confront himself and decide his path forward. In many ways, Trek to Yomi looks to take the samurai ways of Ghost of Tsushima but removing the third dimension.
Coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC in 2022.
Phantom Abyss
Among the exciting announcements was a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming asynchronous action game, Phantom Abyss. The trailer shows some of the deadly traps of the temples that players will need to navigate. Each temple is procedurally-generated and players only get one chance to conquer it.
The game launches on 22 June into Steam Early Access.
Wizard with a Gun
Devolver revealed the first cinematic trailer for the online cooperative sandbox survival game Wizard with a Gun, portraying its unique art style. Set in a magical wilderness wrought with dangerous creatures and arcane mysteries, Wizard with a Gun will allow players to embark on a journey alone or with friends and explore the unknown. The game will have a crafting system for weapons, bullets, and furnishings that players can use to decorate their tower home.
Wizard with a Gun is coming to Nintendo Switch and PC in 2022.
Death’s Door
Death’s Door also got a new gameplay trailer that focused on the game’s tough combat loop and gave insight into its colourful cast of characters. Players will assume the role of The Crow, who must venture into a world of curiosities to recover their stolen soul.
The game launches on 20 July for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC.
Inscryption
From the creator of Pony Island and The Hex, Inscryption is a deck-building adventure game. Players will have to use their cards in order to survive the dark and twisted world full of dead creatures.
Inscryption will be available on PC later this year.
Devolver Tumble Time
Devolver Tumble Time is “the future of physics-based puzzle gameplay”. Featuring Devolver Digital’s vast range of characters to choose from, the aim is for players to rack up points by matching and clearing their pieces with their chosen character’s face from the tumbler. Collecting more pieces powers up each character’s special ability that sets of chaotic chain reactions.
The game is free-to-play with in-game transactions and will launch in 2021 for iOS and Android.
Demon Throttle
Definitely the star of the show, Demon Throttle is a throw-back to arcade bullet-hell shooters. The game tells the story of two unlikely companions, a beautiful vampiress and a dusty gunslinger, out for vengeance against a demon that stole her mystical chalices and slept with his estranged wife. Developed by the creators of Gato Roboto, Demon Throttle combines retro aesthetics with couch co-op and modern design principles.
The game will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive and will only be available as a physical copy.
