NHS The Musical

A new production of NHS the Musical will open at Theatre Royal Plymouth in September as part of the venue’s creative programme for 2021.

The show is a comedy that celebrates the NHS, which is 73 years old. It claims to take audiences “from the surgical theatre to musical theatre.”

“The National Health Service is the envy of the world and we need it, now more than ever before,” the synopsis on Theatre Royal Plymouth’s website reads. “It’s the pride of the nation, providing care for all from cradle to grave since 1948.

NHS The Musical gets under its skin, celebrating the people who make its heart beat. Sharper than a scalpel, this fast-paced comedy show takes you from the surgical theatre to musical theatre, pumping with songs, satire, sass – and gas and air. But beware! This beloved institution may be the perfect tonic, but it can also be the bitterest pill. The UK’s largest employer and government’s biggest spender has its own ailments, that just never seem to be cured.”

The show is written by Nick Stimson and Jimmy Jewell, and will be directed by Stephen Fletcher, who is also the Artistic Advisor for The Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse.

It will run from 17 to 25 September at Plymouth’s Lyric Theatre and is set to tour the UK in 2022.

The theatre is currently recruiting for a creative team for the production. More details can be found on their website.
