Casting details have been announced for The Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC’s) production of The Comedy of Errors, set to run from 13 July – 26 September in the Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Garden Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The production will then tour at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, and the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford from 22 October to 6 November. Plans for the production to spend some time in London have also been confirmed.

The production, directed by Phillip Breen, was due to be a part of the RSC’s 2020 season, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 17-strong cast features members of the original acting company, including Jonathan Broadbent, Avita Jay, Greg Haiste. Additional roles have been recast.

Director Phillip Breen says “when we first conceived of this Comedy of Errors back in 2019, we had no idea that this production would welcome the RSC’s audience back from the global pandemic. But this play of family reunions – people finding each other again, people holding each other at sunset – seems entirely apt for this moment’.’

Breen, whose previous RSC director credits include The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Provoked Wife, and The Hypocrite, added that he is “delighted that later in the year we will be taking our outdoor production inside when we visit theatres in Nottingham, Canterbury and Bradford.”

The 2021 production will be sponsored by Darwin Escapes. Tickets go on general sale on 24 May.
