A Bridgerton spin-off, featuring the origins of Queen Charlotte has been greenlit by Netflix.

Bela Bajaria, Head of Global TV for Netflix, commented on the Bridgerton expansion: “Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton. Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love.”

Queen Charlotte’s story is the first original series in the ‘Bridgerton-verse’. The 1813 set plots, loosely follow Julia Quinn’s source material.

Netflix also confirmed Jess Brownell as the new showrunner for seasons three and four, taking over from Chris Van Dusen. Brownell has worked on various projects at Shondaland, namely Bridgerton’s earlier seasons, Inventing Anna and Scandal.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding working alongside Shonda, Betsy, and Chris Van Dusen on the first two seasons of Bridgerton. And now, as these beloved characters are entrusted to me, I cannot wait to lend my unique vision to the next two seasons. I feel so fortunate to have found a home at Shondaland and to have the support of Shonda and Betsy as I move forward into this new chapter”, Brownell reacted.

The first season followed the lives of London high society, following debutantes during the marriage season. It amassed 82 million viewers, with Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon (Regé-Jean Page) at the centre of the drama. Page recently exited the series as the next release will focus on Anthony Bridgerton’s quest for the perfect match. The new season of the Regency romance was first announced earlier in the year and production is currently underway.

Bridgerton is available to watch on Netflix.
