Burn Bright, a recently established group that helps to make theatre fairer for women writers, are launching a fundraising appeal.
The company are planning to pause their digital events over the upcoming months so they can plan and fundraise, and hope to raise £15,000 to match their original funding.
Co-founder Tori Allen-Martin said “we are so proud of what we’ve achieved and what we’ve been able to give back with the money raised, but in line with the transparency we hold so dear, we are simply out of cash. We pride ourselves on paying our writers and other collaborators and we refuse to stop doing that, so for now, our only option is to press pause.
“This is by no means a goodbye, it’s a see you later and you can be sure that we will be back. There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise, and there are three of us fighting this battle! We can’t wait to continue burning the house down.”
Allen-Martin co-founded Burn Bright alongside Sarah Henley and Tara Finney last May. Since then, they have given paid commissions to 23 women and provided almost 500 one-on-one free support sessions for over 250 women.
Their event Burn Bright: Here Me Roar, which features seven new plays, will remain available to watch via their website until 22 September.
Donations to the initiative can be made online.
