Organisers of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe have announced that show registration for this year’s festival will open on Wednesday 5 May.

Artists and venues will be able to register fringe shows right up until the end of the festival, and ticket sales for audiences will launch in early summer.

Plans for what the festival will look like this August are still very much in the early stages. Much is dependent on the guidance from the Scottish Government about required social distancing measures and crowd capacities.

Nonetheless, the festival organisers are hoping to put together a festival that combines socially distant live events as well as digital shows, which had previously been discussed as one of the event’s planned eventualities following last year’s purely digital fringe.

All registered performers and venue companies can also make use of a new Fringe Player, a secure platform for artists, companies, and venues to host their shows digitally in the absence of a physical venue.

Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive of the Fringe Society, said “we’re delighted to open for registration for 2021.

“Through the work being created across the various digital platforms, including the Fringe Player, artists have a brilliant opportunity to reach audiences and communities all over the world. I look forward to seeing how our Fringe creatives use these platforms in 2021 and beyond.”

Earlier this week, key venues expressed concerns that a lack of clear guidance was preventing them from making preparations in time to participate in the festival this year.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe will take place from 6-30 August.
