Nominees for the 75th annual EE BAFTA ceremony have been announced today, with Dune and The Power Of The Dog leading the charge with the most nominations.
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic and Jane Campion’s Western drama received eleven and eight nominations apiece, while Belfast, No Time To Die, Licorice Pizza and West Side Story round out the top spots with more than five nods each.
Keeping Dune and The Power Of The Dog company in the Best Film category are Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical coming of age drama Belfast, Paul Thomas Anderson’s love-letter to seventies California Licorice Pizza and a surprise entry in Adam McKay’s star-studded satire of the apocalypse Don’t Look Up.
More surprises are in store in BAFTA’s Director category, with After Love‘s Aleem Khan, Happening‘s Audrey Diwan and Titane‘s Julia Ducournau all beating out Denis Villeneuve and Kenneth Branagh for shots at the top prize.
Other notable emissions include Andrew Garfield, previously a bookie’s favourite in the Leading Actor category for his portrayal of songwriter Jonathon Larson in Tick, Tick, Boom!, and Denzel Washington for the title role in Joel Coen’s The Tragedy Of Macbeth. There was little love too for Pablo Larraín’s Spencer, with Kristen Stewart missing out on a Leading Actress nomination, while David Lowery’s The Green Knight found no friends in either the Special Visual Effects or a very competitive Cinematography category.
This year’s ceremony will take place on Sunday 13 March at the Royal Albert Hall, where it will be broadcast on BBC One in the UK, and online internationally. Rebel Wilson was recently confirmed as host for the awards, which hope to take place entirely in-person for the first time since 2020.
