17. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
It may be 29 years since the film that saw Ferris Bueller and his friends decide that they just weren’t up to school that day, but it’s as relevant to today’s generation of adolescents as it ever has been. The constant thought in your mind during exams is how much freedom you’ll have after them, and with the arduous times of revision and monumental stress, everybody longs for that perfect day of summer bliss; the one where you feel like and can do anything in the world without a single care, that would hopefully turn into one of your happiest memories.
Of course, it doesn’t always end up like this. In fact, that long break usually turns into day after day of lounging about, watching a lot of Netflix and maybe stepping outside now and then. I mean, why else would we compile such a long list of movies for you? At least with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, you can be as close as you ever could to what this perfect day feels like. Because this movie doesn’t have any real story, and it doesn’t have any context or character background, but rather it simply follows a day in the life of three friends and what they experience in that moment. And when that includes dancing to The Beatles on a parade float, driving around in an old Ferrari and generally taking advantage of the simple beauty of life, who wouldn’t ever want to have a moment – a day – like that? Bueller’s antics might make you jealous, but you’ll never be happier about the thought of what you can do with your post-exam freedom.
