3. Scream – Gods Look Down
After Grohl left the band Dain Bramage, he found out that his favourite band and idols, Scream, were looking for a new drummer after the departure of Kent Stax. Grohl – who was seventeen at the time – claimed he was 20 to get into the band, which to his surprise they actually asked him to join. He subsequently dropped out of his junior year at high school to tour extensively with the band for four years.
Grohl recorded two studio albums with the band, No More Censorship and Fumble. It was on Fumble that he wrote and sang vocals on the song ‘God Looks Down’, where he manages to combine a heavy hardcore feel with melodic lyrics and vocals. This way of songwriting would eventually become Grohl’s signature.
Whilst in Scream, Grohl became a fan of Melvins and eventually became friends with them. In 1990, Buzz Osbourne of Melvins took a couple of his friends – Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain – to see Scream perform…and you all know what that led to.
