8. Mission Impossible – Helpless
Grohl first got turned on to punk in 1982, when he was just 13 years old. His cousin took him to his first concert at The Cubby Bear in Chicago to see none other than Naked Raygun. It was from there on out that Grohl wanted to do what they did. Period.
And he stood by that, playing in several local Hardcore Punk bands in DC. He first started out playing guitar in a band called Freak Baby, but it was here that Grohl switched to drums after the band kicked out their bass player. The name was then changed to Mission Impossible, and the rest is history.
All the punk bands that Grohl was part of in this period in his life showcase his chaotic drumming style (that he taught himself on pillows as he was without a drum kit), but it’s Mission Impossible that cemented his reputation as being a maniac on the drums.
It would get to the point at shows where the crowd would focus more on him playing rather than the rest of the band. YouTube his live performances in the mid to late 80s and you’ll see why. Listening to him play drums just doesn’t do it justice.
