Much like Grohl’s side project Probot, Tony Iommi produced a heavy metal album – Iommi – in 2000 with a multitude of musicians such as Henry Rollins of Black Flag, Skin of Skunk Anasie, Brian May of Queen, Matt Cameron of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, Peter Steele of Type O Negative and bandmates from Black Sabbath Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward.
Grohl performed both vocals and drums on the track ‘Goodbye Lament’, showcasing not his drumming talents, but his vocal capabilities. Grohl is known to be able to strain his voice into screaming on a multitude of Foo Fighters tracks, but is also able to keep an extremely soft and tender tone on both acoustic and heavy tracks.
This versatility is shown on this track extremely well, even to the point of it being unrecognizable. He doesn’t go full out with the throaty screams he’s known for, but the change from the somewhat whispering vocals in the verses to the explosive charge of the chorus shows that Grohl is a force to be reckoned with.
